Making the Most Out of Your Read Aloud

the-most-out-of-your-read-aloud

I have to admit that my episode last week with my guest and good friend, Aylin Claahsen, got me thinking more deeply about reading fluency. I realized that we can grow our student’s reading fluency with something that we’re already doing, which is read alouds. I’m not talking about those days when you pick a book off the shelf and decide to share an enjoyable literacy-driven experience with your students. I’m referring to lessons that are focused on specific skills and standards.

When you think of both of these literacy concepts it makes sense that they influence each other. Reading fluency actually refers to the accuracy, speed, and expression of a student’s reading rather than a quick scan of the words on the page. What better way to practice this than read alouds? We need to take advantage of the opportunity to model during read alouds because let’s face it, we know that students are always watching and listening to us. Let me know which of these strategies worked for you and your students!

In this episode I share:
  • Goals teachers should consider during read alouds
  • 2 things that will happen when students improve their fluency skills
  • Strategies for improving reading fluency with read alouds
  • Processes to teach your students when they come across unknown words
  • The benefits of pausing during read alouds
