Understanding the Importance of Fluency and Incorporating it Into Your Busy School Day with Aylin Claahsen

I can not wait for you to listen to this episode with my special guest and friend, Aylin Claahsen. Aylin Claahsen is a certified reading specialist, literacy consultant, and curriculum designer who loves sharing literacy tips for teaching readers. Specializing in Kindergarten-5th Grade, she can be found sharing literacy tips on her blog, social media, or in her newsletter. Aylin has a huge passion for writing engaging passages and creating engaging literacy resources. She has seen the impact it has on readers of all ability levels and she truly loves helping readers, near and far. Knowing that is one way that she gets to connect with students and teachers all around the world makes her heart so happy.

Aylin also truly believes that building confidence in readers is one of the most important things teachers can do. If she is not working on engaging literacy resources or helping a kiddo build their skills as a reader, you can find her spending her days with her favorite people- her daughter, her son, and her husband. One other thing you’ll also likely notice about Aylin- she loves using way too many exclamation points and saying YAY or LOL in every other sentence! She simply cannot wait to keep chatting all things literacy with you!

If you’re an elementary teacher you may consider reading fluency as the child’s ability to read a story from start to finish. During this discussion with Aylin you’ll learn that fluency is really much more than that! It truly connects to so many different skills that will improve reading comprehension. By using these strategies, you can focus on fluency without recreating the wheel or disrupting what you’re already doing.

In this episode we discuss:
  • What reading fluency really means
  • Reasons teachers should focus on fluency
  • How fluency corresponds to reading comprehension
  • Ways to incorporate fluency strategies into the day
  • The benefits of using centers during your reading block
