Finding ways to support students, whether it’s in writing or other academic needs, is a passion of mine. Therefore, when I had ESL students in my classroom, it was my goal to help them grow, learn, and develop academically and in the English language.
In last week’s episode, episode 110, I shared writing strategies that support ESL students, so be sure to take a listen if you haven’t already. On the podcast today, I’m sharing 4 additional tips that will help your ESL students find success in your classroom.
When having students in your classroom who need additional support, it’s important that each support helps them grow academically, in the language, and provide simple action steps. These 4 tips are simple, yet effective for your ESL students, or really, any student needing additional support pertaining to literacy. My 4 tips are:
- Allow and welcome more think/wait time
- Provide oral response stems or rephrase student statements
- Use visuals and icons
- Read aloud to students
While I was in the classroom and teaching ESL students, my number one goal was building confidence and allowing them to feel a part of our classroom, even if the language is hard for them. By utilizing these tips, you will see how it positively enhances the transition of your students, while developing their comprehension of the language.
In this episode on helping your ESL students find success, I share:
- 4 tips to support your ESL students
- Why allowing wait time helps students go through the different processes to formulate an answer
- The many benefits of using visuals in your classroom, no matter what grade level
- How read alouds are the most beneficial thing you can do in your classroom
